Pilot Implementation Report – Lira District, Uganda
Reporting Period: January – June 2025
Prepared by: Purewish Foundation Uganda.
Executive Summary This report presents the findings and outcomes of a 6-month pilot of the Safe Start model in two sub-counties in Lira District, Northern Uganda. The model provides trauma-informed, play-based early childhood learning hubs to support vulnerable children aged 2–12 affected by conflict, while also strengthening their caregivers and community-based support systems. Over the pilot period, Safe Start reached 300 children and 100 caregivers, demonstrating measurable improvement in early learning engagement, emotional and social well-being, and caregiver-child interaction. These results indicate that the model is both impactful and scalable.

Purewish Junior School is established in Lira City, Northern Uganda, to respond to the critical need for quality and affordable education for vulnerable children. The School vision is giving hope and opportunities to children affected by the region’s history of conflict, poverty, and displacement. Northern Uganda endured over two decades of war and insurgency, which left many families impoverished and countless children without access to proper education. To bridge this gap, Purewish Junior School provides a safe and nurturing learning environment where children can grow academically, socially, and spiritually. The school will operate on an inclusive model: offering free education to orphans and children from the most vulnerable families while allowing those who can afford to contribute modest school fees. In this way, the school promotes sustainability while ensuring no child is left behind. Beyond academics, the school emphasizes character building, life skills, and community values to nurture well-rounded future leaders.
Learn MorePurewish Institute of Innovation and Technology is established to provide market-relevant vocational and technical training for vulnerable youth in Northern Uganda. The institute was conceived as a response to the high rates of unemployment, poverty, and social vulnerability among young people—particularly those affected by displacement, human trafficking, and post-conflict recovery in the region. The institute delivers competency-based training programs in trades such as tailoring and fashion design, hairdressing and beauty therapy, carpentry and joinery, information and communication technology (ICT), Fashion and Design (Tailoring), Hairdressing, Building and Concrete Practice, Electrical Installation, agribusiness, and entrepreneurship. These programs are structured to run between six months, one year and three years equipping learners with both technical expertise and business skills necessary to secure meaningful employment or establish sustainable enterprises. By fostering innovation, creativity, and self-reliance, Purewish Institute of Innovation and Technology seeks to bridge the gap between education and the labor market. Its long-term goal is to contribute to poverty reduction, gender equity, and economic empowerment, thereby strengthening community resilience and supporting inclusive development in Northern Uganda.
